"....We're home...." Hijikata growled impatiently, carrying Manu on his back (even if the child was wide awake). The group behind him gave an enthusiastic cheer, before rushing into the all-too-familiar sewers, eager to greet family and friends and lovers. Hijikata sighed.

The party had to return. Hijikata had been completely against it, but in the end, the subordinates won. They had been an enthusiastic lot at first, all eager to see the outer world and become heroes in an adventurous environment. What assaulted them after the first few days were uncertainty and tension in a foreign land. Then, came the homesickness. Yet, Hijikata pushed them along mercilessly, going out on his own when the tired, whining group refused to keep up with him. It couldn't last, though, and had eventually ground to a halt.

Then, the whining began. At first, Hijikata lashed out against anybody who whined words of weakness. Then, as it grew in numbers, he turned his ear away from them, choosing to ignore them. Finally, they pestered him, until he was finally forced to give in, due to their mental and emotional inability to move forward.

Next time, he's taking a more durable team.

As of now, though, he walked slowly through the semi-darkness, his thin eyes unable to adjust like his brethren did. He would stop by home, first, and attend Manu's needs. Before he even stopped by home, though, he stopped by the "square" of the town, to write on a crude little notice, a previous alert for his expeditions:

Scouting Party Recruits
Ends ~~Month 8, Day 4, 5023~~ Month 9, Day 6, 5023.
Contact Information: 128 Lansing Ave, xxx-xxxx
Hijikata Toshizou, Party Leader.

After the adjustment, he continued on his way, taking his time...and giving Manu a chance to look around.

"Ugh."

Delilah stood quietly, watching the crowd file through the dim tunnels, marching into arms of their loved ones, rejoicing at the thought of a roof and a warm meal, joyous that they were finally home instead of in the outer world. Oh, how she envied them, how she wanted the chance to go up to the outerworld. Staying stuck in this dump of a home was depressing, if not disgusting. The rumors of what lay above, the bright blue skies and the wide open spaces...

It sounded absolutely perfect.

As the crowd moved and shrunk, Delilah walked behind, acting as if she had just happened to need to go this way. Her large blue eyes adjusted in an instant in the darker tunnels, her pupils dilating to take in as much of the little light there was. She was used to the sudden change, especially after the millions of years passed, and every generation, the child's eye had adapted to a larger size than normal.

It wasn't long until a certain figure caught her eye. She faintly recognized the man--Hi-something-or-other--as the leader of the exploration party, but he wasn't what intreagued her. The little kid was what struck her curiosity. Was it one of the races that lived Above?

Forgetting about the rest of the crowd, she followed the two to the "Town Square." It definately seemed as if the kid was following the older man. Oh he--she?--was adorable, even for one of them.

With one of her smiles, Delilah walked over to the kid.

"Hey there. Are you lost?" she asked, bending at her hips and putting her hands on her knees so she could be more at the child's height. Her blonde hair cascaded over her bare shoulders, and she looked somewhat innocent with that white dress on.

Manu was, in typical fashion, clinging to the sleeve of Hiji's kimono, swinging his arm back and forth as he squinted around in the darkness. It was overly hard for him to see, being used to the surface world where it was bright even at night, with the moon and the stars. Indeed, as Hiji lead him along he tripped several times, being saved only by Hiji's height.

When Hiji stopped for the time being, the child took the opportunity to make his complaints know. "Hiji! My feet hurt! This ground is too hard and the rocks sneak up on me in the dark! Carry me? Please?" It was indeed a childish voice, and he tugged on the other's shirt sleeve to gain further attention.

However, when a voice was sounded quite nearby from a source that he couldn't quite see, he let out a frightened squeal and burrowed closer to Hiji. Nevermind that the voice had been kind sounding, and the words caring.

"HIJI! Hiji! The rocks talked to me! Make them stop!"

Hijikata ignored Manu while he made the adjustment, recapping his pen and squinting slightly to read his words...Which were correct. It was so damn hard to see in the dark....He hated it.

Then, Manu gave an unearthly squeal, sticking even closer into the folds of his kimono like a goldfish's....well, never mind.

"What?" He snapped in surprise, sounding a bit harsher than he had meant to. It took him a moment to discern what the child had been saying.

"Rocks...? What rocks....?!" He had noticed the girl. She seemed like a ghost, being so frail and thin and white. She would be pretty by their standards...in an innocent way.

"Oh..." He wasn't quite sure what to do in this situation. Was he supposed to reassure Manu at this point, saying that the rocks are actually people, or should he apologize to the girl, in the case that she was offended? He chose neither.

"Tch...Getting into trouble..." He growled. "...Oy, Girl!" He grabbed the stranger's thin arm, dragging her out into the dim light of a nearby opening.

"...See? They're not rocks." He told Manu, letting go after the yank.

"Hey!"

Delilah let out a small yelp as she felt herself suddenly being yanked into the small column of light. The man was strong, and her arm felt like it was going to get dislocated. It wasn't so rare underground--no one got the efficient diet they needed, and turned into frail sticks like her. But she hated being called fragile. Delilah Laroque was not fragile. She was an attractive thin.

After the sudden lurch she pressed her lips together, making a thin line, and glared at the man. She could feel his grip still on her arm, and it angered her that he had went out of his way just to yank her into a more visible setting. Clenching her long fingers into a fist, she yanked back at her arm, trying to get out of his grasp.

"Of course i'm not a bunch of rocks," she said, still glaring at the man. "Rocks don't talk." Rocks also aren't as pretty as me, she thought, although she didn't say it out loud yet. No point in making any bad impression on the expeditions' leader, especially since she desperately wanted to go.

Turning her head back to the small kid, she smiled widely and--surprisingly--kindly, making soft dimples in her cheeks. "My name's Delilah," she started, stretching out her free hand. "Nice to meet you."

"Oh." That was the simple reply that Hijikata's revelation received, as Manu stared up at the girl that the older man had pulled from the darkness. "Well," he began in childlike logic, "maybe she was inside the rocks when she spoke, and you used your amazing powers that you don't want anyone else to know about and pulled her out of the rocks and into the light. Ooor, maybe she was a rock and you turned her into a girl!" Yes, a few sleight of hand tricks performed to entertain the strange child, and Manu was convinced that his Hiji was a god of some sort.

At hearing the girl's name, Manu twisted around though stuck close to Hiji as well, looking almost shy now as he hid partially against Hiji's sleeve. "Does everyone with weird ears have a weird name?" He asked softly, of course not thinking that his ears were weird. "My name's Manu, that's a normal name."

Hijikata only sighed in exasperation as Manu went through his 'logical explanation.' Great. On top of that, he got the girl to believe that he's an idiot that can't discern one of his own kind from a pile of rocks. She yanked in opposition, clenching her fist to do so.

"You should leave your hand open when somebody's got your arm...Otherwise, you're just making a stopper for yourself." He let go of her arm, muttering the above advice in a low voice. It was almost a second-nature thing for him to amend people's defense strategies. He would've stepped away at that point, if Manu hadn't been clinging to his pants leg so closely.

He remained quiet after that, though. It was much better for Manu to deal with the girl, it seemed; she was a lot more friendly and open, and not for an unfathomable reason. Manu had to go and blab and say that their names are weird, though...Couldn't the child say anything nice?

Or at least get off of his leg. Hijikata turned his head away, giving a little time for the girl to acquaint herself with the child glued to his leg. A little.

"Really?" Delilah asked, raising her hand to her chin, mocking thought. "Well, I like your name, Manu. I guess that down here, we have different views than in the upperworld. That's where you used to live, right?"

Oh, she was such a good actress. Usually, if it were one of the neighborhood children, she would've sneered, made a rude comment and moved on. Her time was quite too important to be taken up by stupi children. But this child was different. Not only did she--he?--know about the Above, but was also in care of the expeditions' leader. She needed very much to make a good impression on him, falsehood or not.

Throughout her talking, her eyes stayed on the kid, although she gently rubbed at the spot where the man had grabbed to pull her over here. Her eyes flitted up to his face for a fraction of a second, narrowing slightly, although she returned her gaze back to Manu, nothing but "Friendly Stranger" written all over her face. She cooly ignored his comment, although she tucked it carefully into the back of her mind. Might come in handy later.

"What's it like up there? I'd love to hear your stories," she cooed, trying to sound like those mothers who cared about their offspring. Like how her mother was--is.

Congratulations! We honestly don't need to see more, we really like how you roleplay. Not only are you well taught in grammar and spelling (only saw one or two mistakes) your posts are interesting, well thought out, and they provide something to respond to. Your character idea is also very well put together, detailed, and different from what you'd normally see.

The other thing that impressed us is the fact that you were vigilant with your posts, despite the fact that it's almost midnight (well, almost midnight here). We think you'll be an excellent addition to the world!

Hehe, I know my writing wasn't up to what it usually is, and I should be getting to sleep...8:25 Biology lab in the morning *flaildie* Anyways, you can start a roleplay in the sewers, or since Delilah showed an interest towards the surface, she can be a part of the exploration group in the forests (the only roleplay in there at the moment). That's taking place shortly after Hijikata found Manu, but before the actions in this audition. Of course, this audition never happened *eyeshift* So I am off to bed, feel free to look around the site, suggest stuff and have fun! There will be more posting tomorrow.
